The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the scheduling of fresh elections in 59 polling units in Kogi State following the suspension of the election in these areas.
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, a National Commissioner and Member of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, conveyed this decision, stating that the elections in these affected units will take place on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
The suspension was attributed to incidents where result sheets were completed prior to the commencement of voting, particularly notable in Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area (LGA) and various incidents in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, and Okene.
Haruna explained that while results from some polling units in four LGAs were accounted for, the Ogori/Magongo LGA faced the most critical situation, necessitating the suspension of the elections in nine wards comprising 59 polling units and 15,136 registered voters. He highlighted the Electoral Act and INEC Regulations and Guidelines as the basis for conducting a fresh election in these areas.
The decision, according to Haruna, aligns with the Margin of Lead Principle and emphasizes INEC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
Additionally, INEC is determined to investigate any potential involvement of individuals in compromising the election process, intending to apply appropriate sanctions where necessary. The commission assured voters in Kogi State that their votes will continue to hold significance, and their desires will be honored.
