A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, in Kuje Correctional facility pending a ruling on his bail application.

The order was issued by Justice Hamza Muazu on Friday after Emefiele pleaded not guilty to a six-count amended charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Emefiele’s lead counsel, Mathew Burkaa SAN, submitted the bail application, which was vehemently opposed by Rotimi Oyedepo on behalf of the Federal Government.

Following arguments from both sides, Justice Muazu stated that a bench ruling could not be delivered due to the numerous authorities cited by the parties. The judge expressed the need for some time to study the legal authorities and review the exhibits provided by Emefiele in support of his bail request.

As of the latest report, officials from the Kuje prison authority have been contacted to arrange for transportation to convey Emefiele to prison.
