Princes from nine royal families in Oyo, collectively called the Atiba 9, have rejected Governor Seyi Makinde’s appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the Alaafin of Oyo. The group described the process as a disregard for Oyo’s revered traditions and rule of law.

The Atiba 9’s statement, issued by Prince Sina Afolabi of the Adeitan royal family on behalf of the group, asserted that due process was not followed, calling for a review of the selection process to uphold the integrity of the Alaafin’s stool.
They criticized Makinde’s reliance on a proclamation by US-based Awise Agbaye, Prof. Wande Abimbola, who claimed that Ifa chose Prince Abimbola Owoade, arguing that consultations should have been conducted at Ojude Ogun in Oyo.
Concerns Raised:
The Atiba 9 expressed fears that bypassing traditional protocols diminishes the authority of the Alaafin, one of the most revered monarchs in Yoruba land.

Prince Afolabi stated: “The Alaafin must not be reduced to an ordinary oba. We respect Prof. Wande Abimbola, but due process and customs must be followed to preserve the stool’s sanctity.”
The princes also appealed to the Oyomesi, led by Basorun Yusuf Akinade, to resolve internal disagreements and assume their rightful role in selecting the Alaafin.
Background:
This is the second opposition group to challenge Prince Abimbola Owoade’s appointment. Earlier, five Oyo kingmakers declared the decision invalid, asserting that Prince Abimbola Owoade was not recommended to the state government.
Despite the controversy, the Atiba 9 emphasized their stance is not personal but centered on ensuring the Alaafin’s selection aligns with long-standing traditions, culture, and the rule of law.
