Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has spoken emotionally about the trauma of losing two of his closest friends in a road accident in Nigeria.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, Joshua revisited the tragic crash that occurred on December 29 along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami. Joshua himself survived the accident with only minor injuries after the Lexus SUV he was travelling in collided with a stationary truck.
Reflecting on the devastating event, the 36-year-old thanked fans worldwide for their messages of support. He described how what began as an exciting trip with Latif and Ghami quickly “got flipped upside on its head.”
“They’re my brothers, they’re my friends first and foremost. We became housemates, we were living together,” Joshua said. He referred to the late associates as his “lieutenants, general,” and emphasized that they were not just his colleagues but also his protectors.
Joshua acknowledged the plans he and his friends had for the remainder of 2025 and how the accident abruptly changed everything.
“I could reach out to all of you far and wide, worldwide who are showing so much love, care, support through that tragic, traumatic time where we lost Latz and Sina in Nigeria,” he said. “We had so many plans to wrap up 2025, and we were on a mission… We went back home, went to see our families, and everything just got flipped upside on its head.”

Despite the heartbreak, Joshua said he is not afraid of death, finding comfort in the thought of his friends on the other side.
“One day my time will come, and I’m not scared either at all. It’s actually comforting knowing that I’ve got two brothers on the other side,” he said.
He also promised to honour their memories and support their families.
“The mission must go on… I understand my duty. I’m gonna do what’s right by them. I’m gonna do what’s right by their family,” Joshua said, vowing to continue carrying their legacies forward.
