The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a potential terrorist threat targeting American diplomatic facilities and institutions linked to the United States in the country.
In a notice published on its website on Monday, the embassy said the advisory was meant to inform American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria about possible security risks. It urged them to be cautious when visiting U.S. diplomatic offices and schools affiliated with the United States.
The warning specifically mentioned the embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, asking American nationals to remain vigilant while moving around those locations.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.
“The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens take additional precautions when travelling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S.-affiliated schools, to include varying times and routes,” the statement read.
The embassy also encouraged citizens to adopt additional personal safety measures, including avoiding predictable travel patterns and staying alert in public spaces.
“Be aware of your surroundings, keep a low profile, review your personal security plans, vary your regular routes, keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency, stay alert in public places, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and familiarise yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings,” it said.

While the embassy did not disclose the source of the potential threat, the warning comes amid heightened global tensions involving the United States.
The advisory follows recent hostilities involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran, which has reportedly responded with missile and drone attacks against countries allied with Washington.
The situation has also sparked protests in parts of Nigeria, including demonstrations in Lagos and some northern states by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.
The protests were linked to reports surrounding the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in attacks allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel.
Meanwhile, reports also indicated that Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, the wife of Iran’s Supreme Leader, died from injuries sustained during recent strikes on her residence in Tehran.
The development comes amid broader geopolitical tensions, including military actions reportedly ordered by Donald Trump targeting suspected jihadist groups in Nigeria.
