The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has commenced the 21-day mandatory traditional rites known as “Oro Ipebi” ahead of his official coronation.
In a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Rotimi Osuntola, on Friday in Ibadan, it was confirmed that the rites, which began on March 7, 2025, will end on March 29, 2025.
During this period, a daily curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM will be imposed across Oyo township, restricting movement within the area. Anyone caught violating the curfew will be arrested and detained until 7 AM the next day.
The Ipebi rites, a significant part of Yoruba monarchy traditions, involve the seclusion of the incoming Alaafin as he undergoes sacred rituals before ascending the throne.
The official coronation ceremony is scheduled for April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.
