The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced the recovery of the cockpit voice recorder from its aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, in October, killing 25 people.
The device, which forms part of an aircraft’s black box, captures audio conversations and sounds within the cockpit to assist investigators in determining the circumstances surrounding aviation accidents.
In a statement released on Friday, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed that the recovery team had retrieved part of the aircraft’s black box, while efforts continued to locate the remaining components.
The aircraft, a NAF 931 plane, crashed into the swamps of Igbokoda on October 5, resulting in the deaths of five crew members and 20 passengers.
The Air Force had earlier explained that the aircraft was carrying out a routine flight from Benin to Lagos when the incident occurred. It subsequently published the identities of the 25 people who died in the crash.
Giving an update on the recovery operation, Ejodame said additional wreckage, engine parts and human remains had also been recovered from the crash site.
He explained that the exercise was still ongoing, with personnel working to retrieve all outstanding aircraft components for further investigation.
“The investigation is being conducted with due diligence to ensure comprehensive, evidence-based findings,” the statement reads.
The NAF spokesperson added that the recovery exercise also included procedures to ensure the proper handling and identification of human remains.

“The recovery process also involves careful attention to the proper handling of human remains, with the Directorate of Identification and Classification (DIC) undertaking the necessary procedures for proper identification.
“The NAF has sustained engagements with the families of the victims, recognising their need for information and support. Engagement with relevant authorities on environmental concerns raised by the host community also remains an important part of the broader response.
“While appreciating the public’s concern and interest, the NAF appeals for continued patience and understanding as these critical processes require time, careful coordination and professional attention.
“The ultimate objective is not only to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident but also to draw the necessary lessons to strengthen flight safety, enhance ongoing airpower operations and further safeguard the lives of personnel and citizens. The NAF remains committed to providing verified updates as appropriate.”
