Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 41, bringing an end to his career with the national team.
The Al Nassr forward made the announcement in a video shared across his social media platforms on Thursday morning.
In the video, Ronaldo indicated that he was ready to give up Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt, which he has worn throughout much of his international career.
According to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, “the time has come for me to hand my country’s number seven shirt back.”
He also made an emotional remark about the decision, adding, “Some decisions are not made with the mind.”
The announcement comes amid reports of tension between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus during the last international break.
