Gospel singer and evangelist Tope Alabi has warned that she will take legal action against individuals who publish or circulate false and defamatory claims about her, including those who share such content on social media.

The warning was contained in a public notice issued on Friday by her solicitors, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, who said they had received instructions to pursue legal remedies against anyone whose actions amounted to an actionable claim.

Alabi shared the notice on her Instagram page on Friday. Dated October 23, 2026, the document described her as a gospel minister, recording artist, songwriter, actress and public figure with national and international recognition.

The legal firm noted that the singer had spent nearly three decades building her reputation, describing it as an important personal and professional asset protected by law.

According to the solicitors, they had become aware of reports and statements concerning their client that were allegedly false, misleading and damaging, with such material appearing in print, broadcasts, online platforms and verbal discussions.

The notice warned that anyone who publishes defamatory material without lawful justification could be held personally responsible.

It stated, “That any person who, without lawful justification, publishes or causes to be published, whether in writing, in print, through images, videos, audio, electronic or social media posts, or any other permanent form (libel), or by spoken words, broadcasts, interviews, podcasts, live streams, voice notes or any other transient form (slander), any statement concerning our Client which is false, malicious or calculated to injure her reputation, shall be held personally liable for such publication.”

The solicitors further explained that legal responsibility could extend beyond the original author of a statement to people who reproduce or distribute it.

“Liability may extend, inter alia, to the originator of the statement and to any person who repeats, republishes, reposts, shares, forwards or otherwise amplifies the same, depending on the circumstances of the publication and any applicable legal defences,” the notice stated.

They also cautioned that using anonymous or pseudonymous social media accounts would not automatically shield anyone from legal consequences.

“The use of anonymous, pseudonymous or unverified accounts does not, of itself, confer immunity from legal liability,” the solicitors said.

The firm added that Alabi could seek court orders, where permitted by law, to establish the identities of those responsible for the publications, including through relevant digital platforms, website hosts and service providers.

Those who had already circulated the alleged defamatory material were instructed to remove it immediately and refrain from sharing it further.

“Any person who has already published such material is hereby required to remove the same forthwith and to desist from any further publication,” the notice stated.

However, the legal team stressed that deleting a post would not necessarily erase liability arising from its initial publication.

The solicitors said they had been directed to commence legal proceedings against anyone whose conduct justified a claim, without issuing further notice.

Among the remedies listed were general damages and, where legally justified, aggravated or exemplary damages. The singer could also seek injunctions to prevent further publication, court orders compelling a retraction and an unreserved public apology, as well as legal costs on a full indemnity basis.

The firm added that Alabi reserved the right to pursue other remedies available under Nigerian law and refer appropriate cases to relevant authorities.

It nevertheless clarified that the notice was not intended to prevent lawful criticism or the exercise of freedom of expression.

“Nothing in this Notice is intended to restrict truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest, or the lawful exercise of the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by law,” it stated.

The notice comes amid online controversy surrounding Alabi’s reported comments on traditional religious practices and renewed discussions about her past association with the late cleric Elijah Ajanaku.

However, the legal notice did not specify the particular statements or publications that prompted the warning.
