Minister of Works, David Umahi, has warned that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway could be discontinued if President Bola Tinubu does not return to office after the 2027 presidential election.
Umahi made the statement on Friday during an interview with Arise Television, describing the 750-kilometre project as a major initiative of the President that requires continuity for its completion.
The former Ebonyi State governor argued that Tinubu’s re-election would be necessary to ensure the completion of the coastal highway and other major road projects initiated under the administration.
“If President Tinubu does not come back in 2027 (God forbid), the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be gone.
“The 750-kilometre coastal highway is intact and cannot be changed, and nobody has the powers to change it, because it’s already designed and it’s ongoing,” he said.
Umahi also rejected reports that the Federal Government had abandoned the coastal highway in favour of the East-West Road.
He explained that Tinubu had approved the reconstruction of an additional 400 kilometres of the East-West Road, stretching from Edo State to Cross River State, alongside the coastal highway project.

According to the minister, the President directed that the coastal highway should utilise the existing East-West Road corridor rather than create entirely new routes.
Umahi attributed the adjustment to construction difficulties encountered in Ondo State, citing the challenging terrain along the proposed route.
He said some construction pits in the area were more than 100 metres deep, while suitable sharp sand could not be found within depths of up to 300 metres.
The minister maintained that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remains under construction and that the project has not been abandoned.
