A worker sustained minor injuries after a five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street in Wuse II, Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency has disclosed.

The agency said its Abuja Operations Office received information about the incident at about 6:30pm on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

In a statement released by its Press Unit on Sunday, NEMA said it promptly contacted relevant emergency agencies, including the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, to respond to the situation.

The agency also deployed its AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team to the site to support and coordinate search and rescue efforts.

“Findings at the scene indicated that the incident was minor and involved a five-storey building under construction that had been partially pulled down,” the statement partly read.

NEMA confirmed that no fatalities were recorded, while the injured worker was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident comes amid concerns over building safety in Abuja, following previous cases of structural failure in the capital.

On September 7, 2026, a three-storey building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, hours after officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Department of Development Control reportedly sealed the property and directed occupants to leave over concerns about its structural condition.

Reports indicated that the building had shown signs of distress before it came down. Initial updates said no casualties had been reported, while emergency responders were deployed to the scene.

The Wuse Zone 4 incident followed a fatal collapse in the Durumi 3 area, near Gudu Market, on May 16, 2026.

In that incident, a three-storey building under construction collapsed, killing at least five people and leaving several others injured.

Following the tragedy, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse. The developer and an engineer associated with the project were also reported to be facing possible arrest.

Wike subsequently warned property developers to adhere to approved building regulations and ensure that relevant authorities were allowed to inspect construction sites.

The latest incident has again drawn attention to the need for compliance with building standards and proper oversight of construction projects to reduce the risk of structural failures.
