The Nigerian Army has moved 17 Brigade from 8 Division to 1 Division as part of its ongoing restructuring aimed at strengthening its command system and improving operational efficiency.

The transfer, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was formally concluded on October 2 following activities held on October 1 and 2.

The realignment is part of the Army’s transition from an eight-division structure to 12 divisions, a move aimed at improving coordination and strengthening the military’s response to emerging security challenges, particularly across the North-West.

According to a post on the Nigerian Army’s X handle on Sunday, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander of Sector 1 Joint Task Force, North West, Operation FANSAN YANMA, Major General Abubakar Saddique Muhammed Wase, said the restructuring would improve the Army’s operational framework.

“This realignment will optimise our command architecture, improve operational fluidity, and sharpen our response to the evolving security threats in the North West,” Wase said.

As part of his familiarisation tour, Wase visited the newly established 83 Battalion in Malumfashi on October 1. He received a briefing from the battalion’s Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel K.E. Odi, before inspecting construction work at its permanent location in Lambun Kyauta.

Addressing the troops, Wase commended the progress recorded at the facility and urged them to remain prepared for operations.

“I am impressed with the operational tempo and the progress on infrastructure. The troops must remain focused and combat-ready,” Wase told the troops.

The Army commander also met with the District Head of Malumfashi and Galadima Katsina, Justice Saddiq Abdullahi Mahuta (rtd), during a courtesy visit.

Wase stressed the need for stronger cooperation between security agencies and traditional institutions, particularly in intelligence gathering and protecting local communities.

“Security is a collective responsibility. The support of traditional institutions remains critical to our success in intelligence gathering and community protection,” Wase said.

Mahuta, in response, appreciated the Army’s efforts and pledged the continued support of traditional institutions to security agencies.

“We will continue to work closely with the military to ensure peace and stability in our communities,” he said.

The formal transfer ceremony was held on October 2 at Natsinta Cantonment, Katsina, where Wase and the GOC 8 Division, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, oversaw the handing and taking over of 17 Brigade.

The brigade’s commander, Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim, provided a historical account of the formation, which was established in 2016 and became operational on February 22, 2018.

“The 17 Brigade has a rich legacy of service. We are proud of what we have achieved and ready for the next chapter under 1 Division,” Ibrahim said.

The two GOCs subsequently signed the official Handing and Taking Over Notes, bringing the brigade’s assignment under 8 Division to an end.

The ceremony also included a tree-planting exercise at the Headquarters 17 Brigade Complex and a wreath-laying ceremony to honour soldiers who lost their lives in service.

Koughna described the transfer as the beginning of a new phase for the brigade while noting that its institutional identity would remain intact.

“Today marks the formal conclusion of 17 Brigade’s tenure under 8 Division and the beginning of a new era under 1 Division, while preserving its distinct institutional heritage,” he said.

The event concluded with a flag parade, during which the 8 Division and former 17 Brigade flags were lowered before the 1 Division flag and the new 17 Brigade flag were raised.

Wase later charged the troops to uphold discipline and maintain a high level of readiness as they assume their duties under the new command structure.

“Maintain the highest standards of discipline and combat readiness. The security of our people depends on your professionalism and dedication,” he said.
