Nigeria’s Super Eagles opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
The visitors took an early lead after catching Nigeria on the break and beating goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to stun the home supporters.
Nigeria responded before the interval, with debutant George Ilenikhena finding the net in the first minute of added time to bring the Super Eagles level.
The 18-year-old’s goal ensured both teams went into the break with the score at 1-1 and gave him a memorable start to his senior international career.
Nigeria returned for the second half with greater intensity as captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi helped the hosts take control of the midfield and sustain pressure on Madagascar.
The Super Eagles eventually completed the turnaround when another debutant, Moses Usor, scored in the second half to put Nigeria ahead and secure all three points for Eric Chelle’s side.
The result gives Nigeria a winning start in Group L and puts them second in the standings on three points, level with Guinea-Bissau but behind the group leaders on goal difference.

Guinea-Bissau also have three points, while Tanzania and Madagascar are yet to register a point.
Nigeria will continue their qualifying campaign away against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, while Madagascar will host Tanzania on the same day.
The Super Eagles began the qualifiers without striker Victor Osimhen, who was ruled out of the opening matches through injury.
