Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is set to introduce charges for certain business messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026.

The company announced the pricing adjustment in an update published in July, explaining that businesses would once again be charged for service messages from October.

The change applies specifically to organisations using the official WhatsApp Business Platform, previously known as the WhatsApp Business API, to handle large volumes of customer interactions.

Businesses likely to feel the impact include banks, fintech companies, telecommunications firms, e-commerce platforms, logistics providers and major retailers that use WhatsApp for customer support and transactional communication.

However, ordinary WhatsApp users and most small businesses operating through the regular WhatsApp Business mobile application will not be affected by the new charges.

Under the existing arrangement, when a customer contacts a business, a 24-hour customer service window is opened. Businesses can currently send free-form service responses and certain utility messages during that period without paying Meta.

That arrangement will change in October, when Meta begins applying a per-message fee to service messages sent within the 24-hour window.

Meta stated in its developer documentation, “Effective October 1, 2026, Meta will charge on a per-message basis for all service messages, consistent with how Meta charges for template messages. These messages have not been charged since November 1, 2024.”

The company also said, “Effective October 1, 2026, Meta will charge on a per-message basis for utility messages sent in response to users (within an open 24-hour customer service window). These messages have not been charged since July 1, 2025.”

Utility messages typically cover communications such as payment confirmations, order updates and delivery notifications.

Meta has also instructed businesses and Solution Providers to ensure they have a valid payment method registered before the new pricing takes effect.

“For any Solution Provider or directly-integrated businesses that does not have a payment method on file by September 30, 2026, Meta will stop delivering service messages as of when they become charged on October 1, 2026,” the company warned.

For Nigerian businesses, a chargeable service or utility message is expected to cost approximately $0.0101, which is about N14 using an exchange rate of N1,340 to the dollar.

Marketing messages carry a higher fee of about $0.062 per message, equivalent to roughly N84 at the same exchange rate.

The fees are charged directly by Meta and may not represent the full cost to businesses. Companies that access the WhatsApp Business Platform through Solution Providers or other third-party services may also have to pay additional charges imposed by those providers.

For instance, a Nigerian fintech sending 500,000 chargeable utility or service messages at $0.0101 each would incur approximately $5,050, or about N6.8 million, in Meta fees alone at the stated exchange rate.

While the cost per message may appear relatively low, businesses that send hundreds of thousands or millions of messages every month could face substantially higher communication expenses.

WhatsApp has become an important customer communication channel for businesses in Nigeria. Banks and fintech companies use it for customer support and transaction-related updates, while retailers, e-commerce platforms and logistics companies rely on it for order confirmations, delivery notifications and other interactions.

The latest move forms part of Meta’s broader changes to WhatsApp Business pricing, with the company increasingly shifting towards a per-message charging structure.

From October 1, businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform will therefore need to account for charges on service messages and qualifying utility messages that were previously free within an active 24-hour customer service window.
