The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Emmanuel Ugboaja, has died.
The development was contained in a letter from Ugboaja’s family addressed to members of the NLC National Executive Council.
The letter was subsequently made public by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
Ugboaja, a veteran trade unionist and lawyer, became the NLC General Secretary in August 2019, making him the fifth person to hold the position in the organisation’s history.
Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja studied law at the University of Calabar and obtained his law degree in 1987.
He built a career around labour advocacy and trade union activities, eventually becoming one of the prominent figures within the Nigerian labour movement.

According to the NLC’s historical biography, Ugboaja was the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union.
His death comes after years of active involvement in labour affairs, where he contributed to discussions and negotiations concerning workers’ rights and welfare.
