The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that no fire occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, reversing an earlier statement that reported a fire outbreak at the facility.
The authority had initially announced that a section of the terminal was on fire, adding that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) had responded promptly to the situation and that no casualties were recorded.
However, in a subsequent update, FAAN said preliminary investigations showed that the incident was not caused by a fire.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” the authority said.
FAAN added that normal activities had resumed at the terminal while efforts continue to determine what triggered the activation of the fire suppression system.
“Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident,” the statement added.

The authority expressed appreciation to passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of airport operations across the country.
The incident comes about five months after a fire outbreak was recorded at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on February 23.
