The United States Consulate-General in Lagos has held a reception to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American Independence.

The event, which took place at the residence of the U.S. Consul-General in Ikoyi, also marked the official launch of Freedom 250, a yearlong celebration commemorating 250 years since the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

The reception was jointly hosted by Keith Heffern, the U.S. chargé d’affaires, and Rick Swart, the U.S. Consul-General.

According to the consulate, the event highlighted the longstanding partnership and shared democratic ideals between the United States and Nigeria.

The celebration attracted senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, political and business leaders, traditional rulers, representatives of civil society, media executives, social media personalities, academics, members of the creative industry and other guests.

Among those in attendance were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, political economist Pat Utomi, THISDAY Media Group/Arise News Chairman Nduka Obaigbena, economist Bismarck Rewane, Lagos State Secretary to the Government Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and House on the Rock Senior Pastor Paul Adefarasin.
