Veteran Nigerian actor Taiwo Adeshina, popularly called Elegbeje Ado, has died.

Adeshina was widely known in the Yoruba movie industry for his portrayal of herbalists and traditional priest characters and remained one of the familiar faces in indigenous filmmaking for decades.

His death was made public on Tuesday by actor Kunle Afod in an Instagram post.

Paying tribute, Afod described the late actor as one of the legends of Yoruba cinema and praised his contributions to the industry while extending condolences to those close to him.

“We regret to announce the passing of one of the legends of the Yoruba Nollywood industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado,” he wrote.

“Your immense contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema, your talent, and the joy you brought to countless lives will never be forgotten.

“Thank you for the beautiful memories and the legacy you left behind. May your soul rest in perfect peace.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to your family, friends, colleagues, and fans during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Baba Elegbeje Ado. Your legacy lives on forever.”

Adeshina gained recognition in the late 1980s and built an acting career that lasted more than two decades.

Over the years, he appeared in more than 100 productions, including Akeke, Oko Abiku, Kadara Mi and Ageku Abela.

In 2016, he stepped away from acting and later focused on full-time pastoral ministry.

Funeral details have not yet been released.
