Nollywood actor Mofe Duncan has reacted strongly to comments made by media personality Daddy Freeze about the Service of Songs organised in honour of late actor Alex Ekubo.
The memorial event, held on June 10 at Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, attracted friends, colleagues and celebrities who gathered to celebrate Alex’s life.
Daddy Freeze later shared a video online explaining why he attended in black instead of the all-white dress code. During the video, he criticised parts of the programme, questioned why a sermon was delivered and argued that the worship session, led by gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, felt more like a concert than a memorial gathering.
Reacting on Instagram, Mofe Duncan defended the structure of the event and accused Freeze of missing the purpose of the occasion.
He explained that the gathering was never designed to resemble a traditional funeral but was intentionally centred on worship and remembrance because of Alex’s personal values.
“With all due respect, Sir… the night wasn’t about you or anyone else but ALEXX,” he wrote.
Mofe said he rarely gets involved in issues that do not concern him but felt Freeze’s comments warranted a response.
He pointed out that hymns had been performed during the service and said attendees who arrived early experienced emotional moments of reflection.
“It was NOT a FUNERAL, it was a NIGHT OF TRIBUTES & A SERVICE OF SONGS.
HYMNS were sung, Sir. Not once… Not Twice. I’m guessing you didn’t arrive early, because I personally cried during the rendition of BLESSED ASSURANCE.”
The actor further stated that Alex’s close friends repeatedly mentioned his love for worship and that the atmosphere of the evening reflected what he would have wanted.
“It was a NIGHT OF WORSHIP… ALEXX LOVED TO WORSHIP. So, a ‘concert’ of worship, as you expressed, is exactly what ALEXX would’ve wanted.”
Mofe also addressed Freeze’s criticism despite not following the dress instructions for the event.
“You shouldn’t even have the temerity to voice your opinion because, for starters, you didn’t adhere to the dress code.”

Closing his remarks, Duncan said he found it disappointing that Freeze publicly complained after leaving the event early.
“With these few points of mine, I hope I have been able to EDUCATE as well as CONVINCE you and not CONFUSE you that you stepped GRAVELY out of line and the night was not about you or your wants, needs or your opinion”.
