The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has announced Damilola Sonayan-James as the running mate to its governorship candidate, Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the state election.
The announcement was made on Monday by Lagos APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, who said Sonayan-James was selected after extensive consultations and a thorough screening process.
According to Ojelabi, her choice was based on her leadership qualities, loyalty to the party, grassroots support, and capacity to contribute to the continued growth of Lagos State.
He noted that Sonayan-James distinguished herself through years of service, commitment to the APC, and her record of leadership in both public and political engagements.
The confirmation followed growing excitement among supporters in Badagry, her hometown, after reports emerged in late May suggesting she was the frontrunner for the deputy governorship position.
Her emergence was also ratified during a meeting attended by key party stakeholders, including Governance Advisory Council leader Tajudeen Olusi, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat, Ojelabi and other senior APC figures.
Describing the ticket as a blend of experience and innovation, Ojelabi said the Hamzat-Sonayan-James partnership reflects the party’s vision for continuity and inclusive development in Lagos.

Hamzat secured the APC governorship ticket during the party’s primary election on May 21, recording an overwhelming victory. His closest challenger, Lanre Jim-Kamal, received one vote, while another aspirant, Samuel Ajose, withdrew before the exercise.
The APC chairman called on Lagos residents to support the party in the forthcoming election, saying its administration remains committed to sustaining development and economic progress across the state.
Sonayan-James, 41, is known for her advocacy in agriculture, youth development, women empowerment, education and community-based social intervention programmes.
Before becoming APC Deputy Woman Leader in Lagos, she served as Supervisor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area. She also previously contested for the chairmanship position of the council but was unsuccessful.
Within the party, she has earned recognition for her grassroots mobilization efforts and strong connection with women and young people, a reputation that has earned her the nickname “Sisi Eko of APC.”
