The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that students, pupils and teachers kidnapped during last Friday’s attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been rescued.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, clarified the situation in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan, urging residents to disregard viral claims suggesting the victims had regained freedom.

According to the police, security operatives are still carrying out intensive operations aimed at securing the safe release of the abducted victims and apprehending those behind the attack.

“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the abducted students, pupils, and teachers in Orire Local Government Area are yet to be released, as intensive efforts by security agencies continue to ensure their safe rescue and the arrest of those responsible for the criminal act,” the statement read.

“The Command hereby debunks the rumour currently circulating that the victims have been rescued.”

The police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, warning that fake reports could hinder ongoing rescue operations.

“Members of the public are urged to remain calm, support the ongoing efforts of the joint security team, and verify every piece of information before sharing it,” Olayinka stated.

“The spread of fake news and misinformation only creates unnecessary panic, heightens tension, and diverts limited security resources that are critically needed for the ongoing operations.”

The command assured residents that verified updates would be communicated as developments unfold.

“The Command assures the good people of Oyo State that updates and verified facts will be communicated as developments unfold,” the statement added.

Residents seeking accurate information were advised to contact the Police Public Relations Officer or the command’s control room.

Meanwhile, Abayomi Fagbenro, security adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde, also confirmed that the abducted students and teachers had not been released as of Thursday morning.
