Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit service, which previously allowed eligible prepaid customers to borrow airtime or data and repay on their next recharge.
In a statement released on Friday, the company’s Director of Corporate Communications & CSR, Femi Adeniran, said the decision forms part of ongoing operational changes aimed at aligning with evolving regulatory requirements in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
Despite the suspension, the telecom operator assured customers that normal airtime and data purchases remain fully available through existing recharge channels, with no disruption to general services.
The company also stressed that the temporary pause will not impact network quality or overall service delivery nationwide.
Speaking on the development, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the decision as a responsible step in ensuring compliance and operational integrity.
“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he said.

The company added that customers will be informed once there are updates regarding the restoration or future adjustments of the suspended service.
The suspension comes amid increasing regulatory oversight of digital lending and credit-based telecom services in Nigeria, as operators continue to adapt to stricter compliance frameworks and consumer protection standards.
