Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has announced that the 2027 general election will mark the end of his presidential ambitions.
He made the statement on Wednesday during an interview on Arise TV.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, who will be 80 years old by the 2027 election, has contested for Nigeria’s presidency multiple times, including in 2007, 2019, and 2023.
Abubakar said he believes younger Nigerians aspiring to leadership should first gain experience under senior political figures before taking up top positions.
“I personally believe that they require experience and tutelage from the older generation,” he said.
The former Vice-President, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 election before joining the ADC in 2025, also reflected on his long-standing political ambition.

In 2024, he had said he was open to continued participation in presidential contests, stating: “Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy.”
However, his latest remarks signal a shift, as he confirms that the 2027 race will be his final attempt at the presidency.
