The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the arrest of personnel involved in a violent confrontation with soldiers in Bayelsa State during President Bola Tinubu’s visit on Friday.

A viral video captured uniformed officers engaging in a physical fight as the situation quickly escalated into a chaotic brawl.

In the footage, a driver of a Hilux vehicle marked “Naval Police” was seen stepping out of the vehicle and exchanging heated words with occupants of another car. The situation intensified when he returned to his vehicle and a soldier wielding a rifle approached and allegedly threw a punch, triggering further violence.

The confrontation degenerated into a melee, with reports indicating that cudgels were also used as the incident unfolded in public view.

The clash reportedly occurred as President Tinubu was leaving the venue of an official engagement in the state.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism from Nigerians, many of whom described it as a sign of indiscipline within the ranks of the security forces.

Reacting to the development, the Nigerian Navy confirmed that those involved have been taken into custody and are facing disciplinary action.

“The affected personnel are in custody and already undergoing appropriate administrative and disciplinary procedures in accordance with extant military regulations,” said Abi Folorunso, Director of Naval Information, in a post on X on Saturday.
