North and Central Africa have been added to the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) as the prestigious film and television awards prepare for their 12th edition, marking a major step toward broader continental representation.

Following the success of the 11th edition, the expansion reflects the organisers’ commitment to inclusivity and strengthening the awards’ reach across Africa.

From Lagos to Nairobi, Dakar to Johannesburg, African storytelling continues to highlight the continent’s diverse cultures, identities, and global connections. The 12th edition aims to build on this legacy by celebrating creativity while contributing to cultural and economic growth.

Ahead of the ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, Africa Magic hosted a press briefing at the MultiChoice Studio in Ilupeju, giving a preview of what is expected to be one of the most ambitious editions yet.

Since its launch in 2013, the AMVCAs have played a significant role in Africa’s creative industry, supporting over 30,000 jobs across various sectors, including writers, editors, designers, and technical professionals.

Speaking at the event, Executive Head of Content and Channels at MultiChoice West Africa, Atinuke Babatunde, emphasised the importance of recognising all contributors within the creative ecosystem.

“Beyond the lights, the red carpet, and the applause, there is a deeper story—one of craftsmanship involving writers, directors, editors, designers, technicians, and many others who shape the stories we love,” she said.

“This year, we remain intentional about celebrating that ecosystem of excellence.”

The 12th edition will introduce new Indigenous Language categories for North and Central Africa, aimed at promoting linguistic diversity and cultural representation across the continent.

A total of 32 award categories will be presented, including 18 jury-selected awards, 11 viewer-voted categories, and three special recognitions such as Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer awards.

Veteran actress Joke Silva has been named Head Judge for this year’s edition, bringing her extensive experience in the industry to the role.

The awards are headlined by Don Julio as lead sponsor, highlighting the AMVCAs’ continued growth as a platform celebrating African creativity.

Representing the sponsor, Head of Marketing Africa Partner Markets at Diageo, Segun Ogunleye, said the partnership aligns with the brand’s values.

“At Diageo, we are driven by a simple but powerful purpose—to celebrate life every day and everywhere. Moments of joy, culture, creativity, and connection are at the heart of what we do, and the AMVCAs embody this authentically,” he said.

Other sponsors for the 12th edition include brands such as Guinness, The Singleton, Onga, Johnnie Walker (Blonde, Blue, and Black), Orijin, MTN, Smirnoff Ice, Quickteller, Verve, Indomie, and Lush Hair.

The nominees for the 12th edition will be unveiled on Sunday, March 29, 2026, during a live broadcast on Africa Magic channels at 7:00 p.m., hosted by AMVCA-winning actor Chiemezie Imo.
