The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of students linked to a bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre that recently sparked outrage online.

The development follows the circulation of a disturbing video on X about a week ago, which showed two male students violently attacking a fellow student who was lying defenseless on the ground. In the footage, one of the suspects was seen clutching the victim’s uniform while repeatedly stomping on his chest as the boy cried out in pain.

The clip triggered widespread condemnation, prompting the school authorities to expel the students involved. The Edo State Government also stepped in, calling for their arrest and prosecution while warning against any form of bullying.

Providing an update on Saturday, police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem disclosed that all those connected to the incident have been identified and taken into custody. She added that the suspects would be charged before a family court in line with laws protecting minors.

“Following a thorough and painstaking investigation, the command confirms that all individuals directly connected to the incident have been identified, while those implicated have been apprehended and are being charged to the family court in accordance with extant laws guiding juvenile justice and child protection,” the statement reads.

Ikoedem further revealed that the Commissioner of Police has ordered the усиление of the Operation Safe Schools initiative across secondary schools in the state to strengthen monitoring and prevent similar occurrences.

She noted that authorities would also intensify advocacy efforts through the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, targeting students and school administrators with sensitisation and reorientation programmes.

“Additionally, the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices has been mobilised to engage students and school administrators through advocacy, sensitisation, and reorientation programmes,” the PPRO said.

“While appealing to members of the public to remain calm, the command assures that proactive steps were being taken to ensure that justice is not only served but that measures are also emplaced to prevent a recurrence,” the statement added.

The command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, while ensuring the safety and protection of residents, particularly children.
