The Lagos State Government on Saturday dismissed reports circulating online that the state had resumed its monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, clarified that no official announcement has been made regarding the start date of the exercise.

Speaking on the matter, Wahab explained that during a project inspection tour last Sunday, he only indicated that consultations with relevant stakeholders were ongoing.

“The truth is, we were meant to start with a sensitisation programme last week, but we had a logistics issue. We need to find a day that is acceptable to all stakeholders,” he said, noting that logistical challenges delayed the planned programme.

The commissioner expressed optimism that the exercise would resume soon, adding that the official date would be announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

He also urged residents to continue their normal activities without disruption, assuring that sufficient notice will be provided before the exercise is reintroduced.

The monthly environmental sanitation, traditionally observed on the last Saturday of each month from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., was suspended in November 2016 following a legal ruling restricting movement during the exercise.

Recent challenges, including blocked drainage systems and indiscriminate waste disposal, have renewed calls from residents for the exercise to be reinstated.
