Afrobeats superstar Davido has announced that he is dropping his custody case involving his daughter, Imade Adeleke, stressing that he never intended to seek full custody but rather a joint arrangement. The case also involves Imade’s mother, Sophia Momodu.
Davido and Sophia, who dated in 2015, welcomed Imade on May 14 of that year. In 2024, the singer filed a motion at a Lagos high court requesting “unrestricted access” to his daughter. Sophia, in response, insisted that she had never denied Davido access to Imade.
On Friday, the award-winning musician took to his X account to address the narrative surrounding the legal proceedings, clarifying that he had only sought joint custody.
“I never asked for full custody … I asked for joint custody,” he wrote.
“Nobody won, nobody lost… so I don’t know why some people are celebrating… there’s nothing to celebrate.”
Davido explained that his decision to withdraw the case followed a moment in court he described as deeply inappropriate. While confident in his legal arguments, he said the proceedings turned painful when the opposing lawyer resorted to what he called a “low blow.”
“I’ve decided to drop the case because when I was spanking that lawyer in the courtroom… she would get so frustrated… until she brought out her last card — my deceased son. That’s a no no! Lowest blow!” he stated.

Davido and his wife, Chioma Adeleke, welcomed twins in October 2023 in the United States, a year after the death of their first child, Ifeanyi Adeleke. Reflecting on his relationship with Imade, he added that she would grow up understanding his intentions.
“My daughter will grow up knowing I fought for her… let’s move on. One love,” he concluded.
In 2023, Sophia had revealed plans to change Imade’s surname to her own, asserting that she had acted as both mother and father to her daughter.
