Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, has expressed deep concern over the recent surge of violent attacks across Nigeria, urging authorities to strengthen efforts to safeguard citizens.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the pontiff offered prayers for victims of terrorism and communal violence, following deadly incidents in Kwara, Katsina, and Benue states.

“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” the Pope wrote.

His remarks come amid heightened security concerns after a series of attacks that have left dozens dead, displaced residents, and destroyed property across several regions.

In Kwara State, gunmen reportedly launched a deadly assault on Woro village shortly after military operations targeted what authorities described as “terrorist elements.” Reports indicate that the attackers torched shops and the residence of a traditional ruler, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes to escape the violence.

On the same day, more than 20 people were reportedly killed in Doma community, Tafoki Ward, Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, after suspected bandits stormed the area in large numbers, opening fire and causing widespread casualties before fleeing.

Meanwhile, in Benue State, suspected bandits attacked Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area, but security operatives successfully repelled the assailants. Several homes were reportedly set on fire during the attack.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said, “It is true, there was an attack on Anwase, but our gallant officers repelled them and there was no casualty.”

Residents, however, provided additional details, stating that the bandits invaded Anwase around noon on Friday, destroying several homes and creating panic in the community.
