Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, has passed away at the age of 100.

The news of her death was announced on Tuesday by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, who disclosed that the respected family matriarch died peacefully on Monday.

In a statement released by the family, they expressed gratitude to God while mourning her passing.

“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,” the statement read.

It further noted that, “Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11.

“We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”

Madam Onabanjo was married to Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, who served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor between 1979 and 1983. He was also a renowned journalist and publisher, famously known for his widely read weekly column, Ayekooto, before his death in 1990.

Her passing marks the end of an era for the Onabanjo family, as tributes continue to pour in celebrating her longevity, values, and lasting impact.
