Senator Ned Nwoko has faulted the credibility of a negative drug test result recently shared by his wife, Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, arguing that the outcome merely points to short-term abstinence and not genuine recovery.

In a statement released on Thursday through his official X account and signed by his media team, the lawmaker stressed that issues of substance use, recovery and accountability cannot be resolved through social media narratives or isolated test results, but through long-term commitment and professional intervention.

“Temporary abstinence does not erase the underlying challenges that brought this situation to light. Recovery and accountability are not matters for social media posts or public engagement; they require sustained effort, honesty, and a genuine engagement with professional support,” the statement said.

Nwoko also cast doubt on the context and timing of the recent drug screening, particularly when weighed against earlier evaluations conducted, according to him, by established medical facilities.

He stated that previous findings showing drug and alcohol use were obtained from “two independent, reputable centres in Nigeria and South Africa,” adding that the reports were properly documented and legally defensible.

“These reports were professionally compiled, formally documented, and will be presented and defended in court, and the centres involved will be subpoenaed to testify to their findings,” the statement noted.

The senator further warned against using a later negative result to deny earlier conclusions.

“Presenting a later negative result as proof that no prior use occurred is misleading and disingenuous. At best, it reflects abstinence over a period of time. It does not invalidate earlier medical reports, nor does it negate what necessitated intervention in the first place.”

The response came shortly after Daniels announced that she had voluntarily subjected herself to a comprehensive drug test, which she said confirmed that she was free of illegal substances.

In an emotional video posted on her social media pages, the actress denied claims that she was a drug addict and threatened legal action against individuals spreading such allegations. She explained that her decision to take the test was aimed at protecting her public image and reassuring her children.

Daniels admitted to limited past use of ecstasy, popularly known as Molly, but maintained that she had never abused harder drugs.

Nwoko, however, dismissed attempts to trivialise Molly, insisting that the substance remains harmful regardless of how it is described.

“Regardless of how casually it is referenced or repackaged in language, it is a drug. Renaming it does not alter its chemical composition, its risks, or its impact on judgment and stability,” the statement read.

He also emphasised that short-term abstinence should not be mistaken for lasting healing.

“Moreover, temporary abstinence, whether for weeks or months, does not address the underlying issues that brought this situation to where it is today. Healing is not episodic, and accountability is not performative.”

According to the statement, the senator said he had made several private efforts, long before the matter became public, to support Daniels through rehabilitation and structured therapy, but claimed those attempts were unsuccessful due to denial.

On the matter of child custody, Nwoko referred to a court ruling that awarded him custody of the children and dismissed what he described as unproven allegations of human rights abuse.

“When the court gave judgment in favour of Senator Ned having custody, and dismissed all unsubstantiated human rights abuse claims brought forward last year, the court order stated that Regina should go for supervised therapy with evidence of same,” the statement said.

He added that the situation was handled quietly and without public spectacle.

“We did not make it a time for public show. Senator Ned gave Regina a window to quietly seek the needed help. He acted discreetly, keeping matters out of the media while encouraging access to professional care so she could maintain a meaningful relationship with her children.”

The statement insisted that portraying consistent sobriety based on a single test was inaccurate, stressing that “a single test, taken at a time of one’s choosing, does not outweigh documented assessments conducted independently and professionally.”

It also suggested that an independent laboratory appointed by the court could ultimately resolve the conflicting claims, underscoring the need for “reality supported by relevant, credible and admissible evidence.”

The controversy dates back to October 2025, when Daniels accused the senator of domestic violence and coercion amid reports of marital tension.

Nwoko denied the accusations, attributing the dispute instead to what he described as Daniels’ substance use disorder. His camp cited leaked medical records from an Abuja hospital allegedly showing positive results for cocaine, marijuana, morphine and opiates.

Although the hospital later disowned the leaked documents, describing them as unauthorised, Nwoko’s team subsequently maintained that the records were authentic.

Nwoko and Daniels married in 2019, a union that sparked widespread public debate over their significant age gap. The couple has two children together.
