South African authorities have launched an investigation into the unexpected death of Nigerian content creator Nwobu Odera, who reportedly passed away on Sunday due to health complications linked to high blood pressure.
In a viral video, Odera’s companion, who identified himself as Daddy Billly, recounted that the deceased had suffered a serious health episode three days earlier when his heart began racing uncontrollably. He was rushed to a pharmacy, treated, and given medication that stabilized him at the time.
“Three days ago, apparently, Odera had an attack where his heart was beating so fast, you could even see it. So, he was taken to the pharmacy, and the BP was checked, and it was about 171. The pharmacist told him that if he had wasted time, he would have had a stroke. They gave him some medications, and he took them and became stable,” he said.
Billly explained that on Sunday, Odera reportedly did not take his blood pressure medication, which contributed to a decline in his health.
“Yesterday, being Sunday again, he went out. So, I think somewhere along the line, Odera did not take the BP tablet, and from yesterday evening, he started complaining about weakness. When we walked a little bit, he said, ‘No, I am tired. I can’t walk for too long.’ No one remembered to ask him if he had taken his tablet. It escaped everyone’s mind,” he added.
He continued, “We later went to a club, and from there, everyone left, and much later, we got a call that Odera could not move again. We could not move because this is South Africa, and there are procedures; you can’t just take someone that you see who is almost lying lifeless in your car. We had to wait for the ambulance. The ambulance came and confirmed him dead.”

Billly noted that South African law requires an autopsy when young people die outside a hospital or without a known serious illness. Investigators have therefore insisted on a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
“As we speak, Odera died mysteriously. According to South African law, he is still very young, and he died not in a hospital or with a serious illness… so an autopsy must be conducted. In the next four or five days, the result of the autopsy will be out,” he said.
Addressing circulating rumours that Odera’s death was a prank, Billly clarified, “What made me do this video is that people are calling me and saying it is a prank and that Odera is still alive. When the result comes out, I will post it so everyone will see the cause of his death.”
