Russian overnight drone and missile strikes killed four people and wounded about 20 others in Kyiv and several other Ukrainian regions, authorities said on Saturday.

The attack comes as Kyiv’s Western allies increase pressure on Moscow, with the war now entering its fourth winter.

“One rescuer was killed and another wounded as a result of a repeated missile strike on the Petropavlivska community in the Dnipropetrovsk region,” the internal affairs ministry said on social media.

A woman was also killed, and seven people were injured in the eastern region, the ministry added, noting that fire trucks, residential buildings, and shops sustained significant damage.

Moscow also targeted the Ukrainian capital, killing two people and wounding 12 others, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

AFP journalists reported hearing the distinctive sound of missiles followed by powerful explosions around 4:00 a.m. (01:00 GMT). Emergency services later shared photos showing firefighters battling flames as large fires erupted in the Desnyansky and Darnytsky districts.

Russia fired nine Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 62 attack drones during the assault, the Ukrainian air force said, adding that it had successfully intercepted four missiles and 50 drones.

The United States and the European Union this week announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector in a bid to cripple Moscow’s war economy.
