Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about how she earned her first ₦1 million in 1999, a milestone that came through her breakout role as Bisi in the widely acclaimed educational TV series I Need to Know.
In a recent video shared on her X account, Akindele reflected on her early acting journey, offering fans a candid glimpse into the challenges she faced before finding success. She revealed that her career began in 1996 with minor “waka pass” roles and continued auditions that often ended in rejection.
“I made that around 1999. I started my career from like 1996, playing waka pass roles, 1997 going for auditions, getting a lot of nos,” she recalled.
Despite the setbacks, Akindele remained committed to her craft. She emphasized that perseverance was key to securing her breakthrough role, which not only brought recognition but also marked a significant financial achievement.
“Then I got one big yes with I Need to Know, and that is how I got my first ₦1 million,” she said, highlighting how the opportunity changed the trajectory of her life and career.
Akindele went on to discuss how she approached spending the life-changing sum, stressing the importance of discipline and gratitude. The first person she informed about the money was her mother, who guided her on the importance of paying her tithe before spending any part of it.

“What did I do with one million naira? First, I showed it to my mom. Of course, she knew about it, and then mommy advised that I have to pay my tithe first,” she explained.
After honoring her mother’s advice, Akindele used the remaining funds to improve her personal belongings, particularly her wardrobe, which had previously lacked proper clothing and shoes.
“I paid my tithe, then I entered Yaba because I didn’t have shoes. I didn’t have maybe two or three I had there. I didn’t have good clothes. I changed my wardrobe, shoes, bags, everything. The girl that had no shoes yesterday has today,” she added.
The actress noted that this period was not only about financial growth but also about building confidence and establishing a sense of independence. She said that earning her first major pay taught her the value of hard work, planning, and staying grounded despite newfound success.
Looking back, Akindele described her early career as a combination of patience, resilience, and a willingness to seize every opportunity. She encouraged aspiring actors to embrace similar attitudes, pointing out that rejection is a natural part of the entertainment industry.
