Former chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Mele Kyari has being questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

Mr Kyari was invited on Wednesday by the commission to answer questions on financial and technical matters during his tenure.

Sources within the EFCC confirmed that he is currently with investigators at the agency’s headquarters.

The development follows ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in the management of funds allocated to Nigeria’s refineries.

Kyari had earlier been placed on the EFCC watch list over a $7.2 billion refineries’ turnaround maintenance project.

The Federal High Court in Abuja recently ordered a temporary freezing of four bank accounts linked to the former NNPC chief pending further investigations into allegations of fraud.

Mele Kyari served as GMD of the state-owned oil company from 2019 until July 2024 when he was replaced.

During his tenure, the corporation transitioned into a limited liability company.
