Following the public outcry over the recent mass failure of  2025 UTME candidates, the regulatory body starts an early review of most results

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced an early review of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results due to an influx of unusual complaints from candidates.

In a statement released on Monday, JAMB’s public communication advisor Dr. Fabian Benjamin said the decision to fast-track the annual post-examination review process was necessitated by the nature and volume of concerns raised after the results were published last Friday.

Over 1.5 million, out of the 1.9 million candidates who sat for this year’s UTME scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks, prompting public outcry over the mass failure.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board acknowledges the significant volume of unusual complaints following the release of the 2025 UTME results. In response, the Board is fast-forwarding its annual system review—a comprehensive post-mortem of the examination process that is conducted each year, months after the exercise,” the statement read.

JAMB’s review process, which typically covers the registration, examination, and result release stages, will now be conducted with input from experts to address any technical irregularities.

“We are particularly concerned about the unusual complaints originating from a few states within the Federation. We are currently scrutinizing these complaints in detail to identify and rectify any potential technical issues,” Dr. Benjamin said.

The examination body has engaged specialists, including members of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria, chief external examiners, the Educational Assessment and Research Network in Africa, and vice chancellors from various institutions, to assist in the review.

Dr. Benjamin reiterated JAMB’s commitment to ensuring fairness and accuracy in the examination process. “If it is determined that there were indeed glitches, we will implement appropriate remedial measures promptly, as we do in the case of the examinations themselves,” he assured.

The board emphasised its ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the UTME while addressing candidates’ concerns transparently. Candidates with specific complaints are encouraged to report them through official channels as the review progresses.
