Billionaire businesswoman, Aisha Achimugu was arrested early Tuesday morning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission officials.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested businesswoman Aisha Achimugu at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The arrest occurred at about 5 am on Tuesday, following her return from London.

Mrs Achimugu was declared wanted by the EFCC in March 2025 on allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. Her arrest comes a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, ordered her to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday and before the court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

Achimugu’s lawyer Chikaosolu Ojukwu confirmed her arrest, expressing dismay over what he termed a violation of a court order. “Aisha Achimugu, who arrived voluntarily into the country from London, was arrested by the EFCC around 5 a.m. on Tuesday,” Ojukwu said. “In light of what transpired in court on Monday, my client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honour the EFCC’s invitation, but was arrested at the airport.”

Mr Ojukwu criticised the EFCC’s actions, describing them as a breach of his client’s fundamental rights. He disclosed that Achimugu had begun a hunger strike in protest, calling her a “prisoner of conscience.”

As of press time, the EFCC has not issued an official statement on the matter. Achimugu is expected to appear before the Federal High Court on Wednesday, April 30.
