LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has announced a 100% increase in the Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) for Nigerian Army troops, raising it from ₦1,500 to ₦3,000 per day. The increment will take effect at the end of March 2025.
Oluyede made this declaration on Wednesday during his address to officers and soldiers of the 81 Division at the 9th Brigade Parade Ground, Ikeja, Lagos, as part of his duty tour of project sites within the division’s jurisdiction.
“It is unacceptable that troops are still receiving ₦1,500 as their daily feeding allowance. I am committed to improving your welfare,” he stated.
New Housing Scheme for Retiring Officers
To tackle accommodation challenges, particularly for retiring Warrant Officers, Oluyede announced a Nigerian Army Housing Scheme, ensuring that personnel have access to affordable homes post-service.
“In December, we unveiled the first set of houses in Abuja. New projects have commenced in Ibadan, with additional land secured in Jos. More housing units are also being developed in Port Harcourt, Owerri, and Akwa Ibom,” he revealed.
He added that two- and three-bedroom houses under the scheme would be priced as low as ₦8 million, making them one of the most affordable housing options in the country.
Low-Interest Loan Scheme for Soldiers
The COAS further introduced a low-interest loan scheme for soldiers, featuring a 3% interest rate, significantly lower than commercial bank rates of 25%.
“More funds will be injected into the scheme. If you have pressing financial needs, you are encouraged to apply. However, only borrow when necessary, as it is easy to obtain but difficult to repay,” he cautioned.
Uniform & Equipment Distribution
Addressing complaints about soldiers purchasing their own uniforms, Oluyede reassured them that the Army had commenced monthly distribution of 100,000 kits.
“We have allocated uniforms to smaller divisions, with the 82nd Division next in line. Before the end of the year, many of you will receive new sets,” he confirmed.
Commitment to Troops’ Welfare
Oluyede reaffirmed his dedication to troops’ welfare, urging them to remain committed to their duties as the Army continues efforts to improve their working conditions.
