The speakership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly may soon be resolved as key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) intervene.

Reports indicate that both Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached speaker, and Mojisola Meranda, the current speaker, may step aside to allow another lawmaker to assume the role.

APC Leaders Step In

A high-powered delegation, including Chief Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, was tasked by President Bola Tinubu to mediate after the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) failed to resolve the standoff.

  • The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 36 lawmakers removed Obasa and installed Meranda as speaker.
  • The lawmakers accused Obasa of poor leadership, mismanagement, abuse of office, and high-handedness.
  • Despite his removal, Obasa insisted he was still the speaker and even filed a lawsuit challenging his impeachment.

Possible Resolution

According to sources, APC leaders are considering appointing a ranking member from Lagos West as the new speaker to restore stability.

  • David Setonji, representing Badagry Constituency II, is reportedly being considered for the position due to his experience and seniority.
  • Setonji, born in 1959, has been in the Lagos Assembly since 2015 and currently serves as Chief Whip.
  • His selection is also politically strategic, as Governor Sanwo-Olu hails from Lagos Central, making it inappropriate to pick another speaker from the same zone.

Obasa May Withdraw Lawsuit

As part of the political settlement, Obasa is expected to withdraw his legal challenge.

  • A top APC source revealed that Obasa and Meranda will both step down to pave the way for a new leadership structure.
  • The APC is working towards a compromise to ensure peace in the House.

The final decision is expected within a week, as party leaders continue discussions.
