Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a UK prison after serving her sentence. Reports confirm she returned to Nigeria on Tuesday and is currently in Abuja.

The news of her release has sparked widespread celebration in her hometown, the Mpu community, in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Community Celebrates Beatrice Ekweremadu Return

Speaking to PUNCH Online, Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, President of the Mpu Town Union Federated, described her return as a huge relief for the entire community.

“Our joy as Mpu people knows no bounds. It is a great day for us,” Chijioke said. “The entire community is in celebration. People are shedding tears of joy, especially those who relied on the family’s philanthropic gestures. Today is our Orie market day, and the whole market is agog with celebration.”

Chijioke also expressed hope that Senator Ike Ekweremadu would soon return to reunite with his family.

A Day Like No Other

Councillor of Mpu Ward, Ogbuka Edwin, likened the day to a public holiday, noting the immense gap left by the absence of Senator Ekweremadu and Beatrice Ekweremadu.

“We are trusting in God’s intervention to see our hero and leader, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, join his family soon,” Edwin added. “Today is a cheerful day, and we won’t relent in our prayers.”

Background

Mrs. Ekweremadu, her husband, and one Obinna Obeta were convicted in the UK in 2023 for an organ trafficking plot. Her release has brought renewed hope to her family and the community, who continue to pray for the safe return of Senator Ekweremadu.

The Mpu community has expressed gratitude to God, with many seeing the release as a sign of brighter days ahead for the family and their philanthropic legacy.
