Speed Darlington Sues IGP For N300 Million Over Alleged Unlawful Detention

Controversial Nigerian singer, Speed Darlington, has filed a ₦300 million lawsuit against the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over what he described as unlawful detention.

The suit follows Darlington’s arrest in late 2024 over alleged defamatory and cyberstalking comments directed at Afrobeats star, Burna Boy.

Despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court on December 23, 2024, Speed Darlington remained in police custody, prompting outrage from his legal team and supporters.

According to reports, the police were accused of refusing to comply with the court’s directive, with claims from Darlington’s lawyer suggesting that Burna Boy might have influenced the continued detention.

On January 6, 2025, the court once again ordered the singer’s release. Hours after his eventual release, Speed Darlington initiated legal action against the police chief, seeking ₦300 million in damages for the violation of his fundamental human rights.

The case has sparked widespread reactions, with many debating the implications of the lawsuit and the legal complexities surrounding the arrest.

Fans of the singer are now eagerly awaiting further updates as the drama unfolds.
