Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede officially assumed office as Nigeria’s 24th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on December 9, 2024, following his confirmation by both chambers of the National Assembly. In his inaugural address at the Army Headquarters, Oluyede emphasized his commitment to inclusive leadership, unity, and fostering innovation to tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Key Highlights of His Assumption of Office:

  1. Tribute to Predecessor:
Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede paid homage to the late COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, commending his distinguished service to the nation.
  2. Commitment to Inclusive Leadership:
He pledged to enhance collaboration across all ranks of the Nigerian Army, aiming to build a more united and cooperative institution.
  3. Innovation in Addressing Security Challenges:
The COAS emphasized the importance of developing creative and adaptive strategies to counter threats such as terrorism and insurgency, especially in the North-East and other high-risk regions.
  4. Call for Proactivity:
Stressing the fluid nature of national security threats, Oluyede called on commanders to prioritize adaptability in their approaches and stay ahead of emerging risks.
  5. Regimental Tradition:
During the ceremony, the previous Nigerian Army flag was retired and preserved in the Army Museum, a symbolic gesture acknowledging the leadership legacy of the outgoing COAS.

Focus Moving Forward:

Under Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede’s leadership, the Nigerian Army aims to:

  • Strengthen its proactive capabilities.
  • Foster an inclusive work environment.
  • Innovate its operational strategies for addressing terrorism and other security issues.

This approach signals a forward-thinking and collaborative stance in addressing Nigeria’s multifaceted security challenges.
