The remains of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja have arrived in Abuja in preparation for his interment.

His body arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 12:16 pm after leaving Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos around 11am.

The Nigerian Air Force plane NAF 918 conveyed the body.

Funeral activities will begin on Thursday with a service of songs.

Upon arrival at the Abuja airport, a guard of honour was accorded to the body and was taken down the red carpet in full view of Nigeria’s military top brass.

Lagbaja will be buried at the National Military Cemetery, according to the army’s spokesman Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu.

His death was announced last week by President Bola Tinubu who said he died in Lagos after a period of illness.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja served as army chief for one year and four months following his appointment to the position by Tinubu in June 2023.
