Abia State High Court sitting in Umuahia on Wednesday ordered the Federal Government to pay the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu N1 billion as damages over the alleged invasion of his father’s house on September 10, 2017, by the military.
Mr Kanu had asked for N5 billion as damages.
Justice Benson Anya also granted the relief sought by Kanu’s legal team led by Aloy Ejimakor, ordering the Federal Government to issue a public apology in three national dailies over the illegal invasion.
The judge, however, dismissed reliefs sought by Kanu on his alleged arrest and repatriation from Kenya and continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
He also advised the Federal Government to adopt a political resolution in dealing with issues involving Kanu.
The court’s ruling comes as Kanu is before a Federal High Court in Abuja where he was re-arraigned on 15 amended charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism.
Kanu appeared in the same Fendi outfit which Justice Binta Nyako warned against.
When questioned why that was so, the prosecution said Kanu opted for the clothes because they are designer outfits, an allegation which the defence team countered.
